THE ART OF ELAINE GEISINGER

Free-standing sculptures, bas-reliefs, or paintings that draw you emotionally into their quiet individual worlds.

A mother, with baby on her arm and a toddler clutching her hand, looks for cars as she crosses the street toward you. Three young women, in bright dresses, hats and high-heeled shoes, pass her to elbow their way through the crowds at the service window of Coney Island's own "Nathan's Famous", the hot dog capital of the world. The time is the early 1960's and you can smell the hot dogs, hear the screams from roller coaster riders, and see the sun lighting up the yellow, green, and red Nathan's signs.

This is not a time machine. It is one of Elaine Geisinger's richly painted bas-reliefs, vivid with life, motion, color and humor.

Plump women in swim suits change their clothes in a humid locker room where their companions lie sprawled getting the massage that makes exercising worthwhile. Three women in a cool blue-green shower where the refreshing water glints in drops on their pale skin. A rotund woman in a sauna with a barely legible book, "Eros in Antiquity", held in her hand. This tongue-in-cheek painted bas-relief spa series leaves the viewer certain that he or she knows each of the women by her first name.

Elaine, who started her career as a sculptor, working first in terra cotta and bronze, and later in marble and wood, wanted to add more life to her sculptures. She began to experiment with painting bas-relief, bronze and marble sculptures, and, in the process, created a most unusual, vital new dimension in art.

Her emotionally charged work is noted for its love and understanding of the human condition...mainly, a humorous look at women's place in the world.
